Welcome to Val's Art Studio In-Person Classes - Located at the San Diego Made Factory
Please Note: The San Diego Made Factory was severely affected by the flooding on Jan 22. Currently the building is under flood remediation and renovation. All repairs are scheduled to be completed around March 1, 2024. In person classes at Val’s Art Studio will resume around mid-March, as the studio will need to be painted and will need to be redecorated. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated!
This is where you can find information on upcoming classes taught in the San Diego area by needle felting artist, (that's me) Val Hebert. I am committed to helping you learn the fun, forgivable and relaxing craft of needle felting. Simply read the descriptions of each class and decide the one that is right for you. Then follow the directions to either purchase the class directly from this page, or send me an email if you need additional information so we can work out the details together. All workshops are taught at my studio in the San Diego Made Factory building, located in Logan Heights area of San Diego. Please remember to mark your class sign-ups on your personal calendar!
Class times will generally begin around 12 noon or 1 pm. All arrangements will be confirmed via email once your class is purchased. Any questions? Please send Val an email!
Student Group Workshops & Private Lessons
NOTE: All group workshops are taught inside my studio, so we will be sitting near another classmate. Please stay home if you feel you are sick. I am happy to make arrangements with you so you can take another workshop if you are sick on the day of class.
I am offering Private classes for YOU - and a friend or two! Classes are taught at my wonderful studio in the San Diego Made Factory building, located in Logan Heights area of San Diego. My space is warm and welcoming. I offer classes most days of the week at a pre-arranged mutually agreed upon date. My studio makes for an enjoyable class experience in a very creative environment. I promise lots of fun, learning, and you will leave with an adorable project completed during our workshop and a NEW Skill. Hooray!
Previous experience NOT required and ALL materials (including tools!) are provided. Signing up ahead of time guarantees your seat! Small snacks & drinks provided! Classes begin promptly at time listed. Classes last approximately 3-6 hours (as noted), or as fast as you work. Any questions, shoot me an email here. Note: Classes are suitable for youth age 10 and up, youth under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Classes limited to 5 people unless otherwise noted. Private classes are available at reduced pricing structure with a minimum of at least 5 students.
PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT purchase the workshop if it is marked SOLD OUT! There will NOT be a reserved seat or materials for you. Workshops (when offered) fill up quickly so it is recommended you sign up as soon as possible. You can send me an email to be added to a Wait list, however, cancellations are extremely rare. If you sign up and miss the class, your fee is not able to be refunded as I saved your seat and prepped all class materials for you.

This brand new needle felted wool painting workshop is as fun and amazing as the project looks! Suitable for the novice felter, we will learn the poke method for transferring an image to wool and lay down fiber with needle felting tools to create the beautiful art pictured. Not everyone’s outcome will be the same! Learn this easy and satisfying method for Most people will take 3 - 4 hours to complete this project.

Needle Felted Bat on a Wood Piece Workshop - New!
Workshop Details:
Hone your needle felting skills in this interactive and informative class. Suitable for the novice felter, we learn how to create a solid needle felted wool base form then turn it into a delightful bat. Bring along a piece of wood from one of your nature hikes and we can mount the wooly bat on the wood base, or use a class provided wood slice to sit your bat upon. So charming! Most people will take the entire 4 hours to complete this project.

Needle Felted Lamb or Fox Workshop

Beginners welcome! Learn, hone and improve your needle felting skills in this interactive and informative workshop. Although suitable for the novice student, we learn how to create a solid needle felted wool base form and then we repeat this skill many times for the animal’s legs, ears and tail. Finishing details leaves you with the most charming friend to take home! Most people will take the entire 5-6 hours to complete this project.

Needle Felted Pumpkin Workshop

The most popular interactive and informative needle felting workshop! Suitable for the novice student, we learn how to create a solid needle felted wool base form and then we add the most luscious wool fiber to create a magical pumpkin suitable to set a festive fall mood or give as gift. Most people will take the entire 3 hours to complete this project.

Needle Felted Cactus Workshop
Workshop details:
Hone your needle felting skills or learn a new skill in this interactive and informative class. Suitable for the novice felter, we learn how to create a solid wool base form then turn it into a charming cactus plant that will never die! You will make flowers from pre-felted sweater wool and sew them to your cactus plant, then use a class provided mini clay pot to set your cactus into. You will take home a finished “plant” at the end of the class. So charming! Most people will take at least 3 hours to complete this project.

Winter Snow Friend Workshop
Workshop Details:
How seriously cute is THIS?! I, for one, am completely smitten by this winter fellow, sitting on a wood slice, sprinkled with sparkly fresh snow, and with a wooly scarf no less! So many crafts go into this project; needle felting, compiling 3-D imagery, sewing techniques and gluing galore! Be prepared to get your hands dirty in this active and fast-paced workshop. Most people will take the entire 4 hours to complete this project.

Matroshka Russian Doll Felting Workshop
Needle Felted Art Doll Class + Optional Make-it-at-home Kit
LOCATION: My creative art studio is in the San Diego Made Factory building, located in Logan Heights area of San Diego.
DATE: Any day that works for both of us. *Note: Class date and/or time can be arranged to the date and time of your choice! Drop-in Needle Felting Open Studio - Set Your Preferred pre-scheduled time
Would you like some personal help with your needle felting skills and feel like you’d benefit from spending some time with me & like-mindeds in my studio? Drop-in sessions will open at 12:00 noon and close promptly at 6:00 pm. Stay as long as you want or need and I will make sure to answer your questions, help you along and calm your needle felting nerves! For the most of my attention, please plan to arrive on time for your scheduled session. Bring along your works in progress, or plan to purchase a kit from me to start on a new project. Please note: this is not a dedicated workshop, but an open studio to sit, craft and visit while getting needle felting tips and pointers from me. Reservation slots limited to 4 people. Needle felting Classes ARE suitable for the novice needle felter! You will learn the wonderful and relaxing craft of needle felting while you create ONE 3-D needle felted art doll character OR One Hoop art piece in my fun and informative workshops. Your project will have an amazing amount of personality, I promise you! You will be DELIGHTED with your finished needle felted art piece that you can take right home and display proudly in your home!
*Please read the **Needle Felting Tools List** below! Students will be able to use my basic tools as part of their class workshop. Additional tools will be available for purchase if desired.
You will learn the following techniques in any of my 3-D needle felting classes:
How to work with needle felting tools
Establishing a solid woolen form, learning to create a substructure that will not collapse over time
Sculpt your form into a desired shape
Applying color to your shaped form
Color mixing wool roving
Creating a solid base so your form stands on it's own
Adding small needle felted details
Attaching additional forms or added fabrics to your needle felted form so the two will not separate
Sewing into your needle felted form to give added details
From these techniques learned in class, you will be able to work independently at home creating additional shaped dolls in this manner.
Additional kits may be purchased on the day of the class for $28.00 - 35.00 depending on the additional number of projects you wish to make per kit.
Most of my classes are suitable for the person who has never needle felted before. Please do not feel intimidated! Needle felting is a very forgivable craft, and I am there to help you every step of the way. You won't want to miss out learning from an experienced teacher, and will enjoy the camaraderie and fellowship in taking a local class from me, Val.
Needle Felting Tools List:
To take a needle felting class, you will need some tools, but please do not worry. A basic selection of necessary tools are included in your class purchase and additional tools are available for purchase from me. Here is a list of the minimum tools you will need:
Needle felting needles, size Fine. I recommend a replacement pack of 5 needles. They do break easily when you are just learning.
A foam style mat to place under your work (for 3-D needle felting classes)
A brush style needle felting mat to place under your work (for FLAT needle felting classes)
A tool that can hold multiple needle felting needles (optional, but preferred)
A pair of small sharp scissors
Cheater style glasses. We work small :o)
Note: needle felting needles are very sharp. You may wish to attend a class with a youngster. I recommend very careful young people, preferably age 10 and above.

I am often asked if I will come to YOU to teach, and the answer is "Yes!" If you are located in or close to the San Diego area, I am happy to discuss the option for coming to you to teach a class. Normally, if I come to you, there is a minimum class participation number of 4 people. Also, I am highly allergic to cats. So please take this into consideration before asking me to come teach at your location. Feel free to send me an email here to get the ball rolling.
